Paediatric Infectious Diseases

Worldwide, two-thirds of the deaths of youngsters under five years aged are caused by infectious diseases, and therefore the prevention and treatment of infections in children is that the favorite priority for global health. Thus, the department believes that professionally-oriented education in paediatric infectious diseases is important within the training of clinicians and clinical academics that will provide the longer term leadership during this key area for global health.

Patients’ resistance to treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) places them at high risk for an unfavorable progression of the disease. In these patients, there has been little evidence that alternative treatments are effective. Nevertheless, biologicals like an interleukin-1-receptor blocker and tumor-necrosis-factor-α inhibitors increasingly are used. If the patient doesn't answer one among this therapeutics, a mixture of two biologicals could be an alternate, but this is often not yet generally accepted thanks to the doubtless increased risk of infection.
